Basingstoke Canal Authority

In late 2023/early 2024 a number of changes were agreed to the control and operation of the Basingstoke Canal.  These were summarised at the April 2024 HDAPTC meeting as:

  • The Surrey/Hampshire CC joint management committee has ceased, and replaced by a new joint committee with an advisory group.
  • A consultant has prepared a management plan, prompted by lack of funds.
  • The future of canal seems to be secure, but dredging will continue to be a problem.
  • Basingstoke Canal Society will be playing a greater role in future.
  • Details of future plans for the canal are not clear.
